Many of us would answer it hasn’t!
If we take a closer look at his subject, we realise that marketing is changing overall. There are new methods and endless paths to market products. Marketers want to affect us the best way possible, make us buy their products and services. One way to do this is product placement. It sounds simple, but believe me it isn’t.
Let’s think about the question I asked in the beginning. I think people are getting affected by it without even realising. Thinking about it rationally, people might feel that they wouldn’t let it affect, but they just might be getting affected anyways. That is how well planned product placements are.
Marketers have effective strategies to reach their potential customers. They know where to pull the trigger when it’s necessary.
Let me try to explain this: Marketers know that the human mind is set for learning new things in every situation. It can happen unintentionally or intentionally. When it’s happening unintentionally the marketers try to manipulate our minds, to accept or idealize the product we have seen. This has worked and it is a very efficient way to boost the product’s brand and sales.
How do marketers then do it? One of the ways to do it, is to use digital marketing. Products can be shown in television (especially in TV-series), films, and in other media. It is very affecting to our mind to see movie hero/heroine using good looking clothes, products, services or something else that we (consumers) could also like to use it. The list could be endless, and the film makers and marketers know it and they use it to boost their products sales. In the other hand the filmmakers and actors/actress will have plenty of cash for “using” the products.
According to Journal of Advertising and the book Consumer Behaviour (Solomon & al, 2008), product placement could be very affecting when the products are visually appearing on a movie star or celebrity that we intentionally or unintentionally idealize and like.
In the following video there is a clip that presents a vintage Ford Mustang. This product is highly seen and noticed. There is a sport car, which helps the film’s main actors to achieve their destination.
Example 2) (picture’s source)
In this example there is one of the most luxurious products: PRADA. It’s usually segmented for adult women who want to have a piece of luxury on them. In this example you can see that already the film’s title has the product’s name there, which means that the company has already paid a bigger sum of money for having their name on it. Overall, product placement is a growing business for marketers and it has been used for several years. Nowadays especially when the competition on the markets is getting harder and harder (of course depending on product),you can see the efforts by marketers are increasing.
Also according to http://www.brandchanel.com, there was a new study on films (2014):
“Appearing in nearly one-quarter (23 percent) of all box office No. 1s, or 9 of the 39 No. 1 films last year, Budweiser and Apple were 2013’s most frequently-appearing products on the big screen.”
So next time you see someone drinking beer remember that it is not be by accident.
So back to my question, has product placement affected on you?
